When Arjuna hit Kiratha with his sword, the sword broke into a thousand pieces.

His tapas was so severe that, the sages living around went to Kailasa and informed Shiva about Arjunas tapas. Shankara smiled and said: "I know why Arjuna is performing tapas. I am going to give him darshan and grant his wish." So saying, he assumed the form of a Kiratha* and his spouse Parvathi took the form of his wife. All his attendants assumed the form of Kirathas and followed the divine couple. When Parashiva entered the place where Arjuna was performing tapas, the entire area began to shine with bright light. At that very same moment a demon by name Mooka attacked Arjuna in the form of a wild boar. Immediately, Arjuna lifted his bow, gandiva and shot an arrow. Presently he heard a voice which said: "O brave young man, stop. I have taken an aim at the boar. We are Kirathas. This place belongs to us. What are you doing here? I have killed the boar and by shooting an arrow at the boar you have broken the law of hunting. Come, fight with me. I am not going to leave you like that." Arjuna was red with anger. A savage hunter had insulted Arjuna. Therefore, he began to shower arrows at the savage, but lo! Every arrow he shot was caught by the savage and thrown on the ground. None of his arrows could even inflict a small wound on the hunter’s body. Arjuna’s quiver became empty. In fact, his quiver was a divine one and it could never become empty. He was shocked. He used his bow and hit the savage on his head with it. The savage snatched the bow from Arjuna’s hand, when Arjuna tried to hit his enemy with his sword, the sword broke into a thousand pieces. Then he began to use logs and stones to hit him. When he failed in it, he began to fight him with his fists, but in vain. Then he locked him in his arms and hit his chest with his when the Kiratha returned the same, Arjuna fell on the ground in great pain. He could not even breathe freely. When he recovered from the shock he began to think about what he should do next.

He prayed to Lord Shiva and made a Shivalinga from mud. He decorated it it with a garland of flowers and began to pray. When he opened his eyes he did not see the garland on the linga. He looked around. The garland and flowers he had placed on the Shivalinga adorned the Kiratha’s body. Arjuna realised that the Kiratha was none other than Shiva himself. He prostrated before him. Parashiva was pleased with Arjuna and he passed his hand on Arjuna’s back and consoled him. In his divine voice, he said: "Dear Arjuna, I am pleased with you. In your previous birth, you were a sage by name Nara. Your courage and splendour are equal to mine.
